DC Jammu reviews desilting, cleaning of irrigation canals Stresses water supply to extreme ends of the network

 

JAMMU, JANUARY 27: Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Dr Rakesh Minhas today chaired a meeting to review the status of desilting and cleaning of kuhls, canals, minor and sub-minor distributaries across the district.

The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Sher Singh, Additional District Commissioner, Vidhu Shekhar, Chief Planning Officer Ajaypal Singh, besides other officers and officials from the Irrigation & Flood Control Department, including SE Hydraulic Circle Jammu, Executive Engineers of Irrigation Division 1 and 2 Jammu/ Akhnoor and Executive Engineer Flood Control, Division Jammu/ Akhnoor.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on routine maintenance procedures, canal closure schedules, monitoring mechanisms and the tendering process for desilting works.

The Deputy Commissioner underscored the importance of adhering to strict timelines for the opening of canals by March this year. “The cleaning operations shall be carried out effectively to ensure desired water flow reaches the Suchetgarh area, which is located at the tail end of the irrigation network,” he emphasised.

The meeting also deliberated on issues related to pollution in water channels and preventive measures to maintain water quality. The Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for regular monitoring and community participation to keep the irrigation infrastructure functional and free from pollution.
