Security forces shot dead two local Jaish-e-Mohammad militants in a gun battle in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, police said.

The two slain were identified as Saqib and Abid Shah who were allegedly involved in the killing of a policeman on May 13 at Gudoora Pulwama.

“The two Jaish terrorists were involved in the killing of unarmed police constable Riyaz Ahmed on May 13,” Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Vijay Kumar said.

Kumar said the operation was launched on Sunday evening at Gundipora area of Pulwama following a specific input about the presence of Jaish men in the area. As the cordon was being laid in the village, there was an exchange of fire.

“As it got pitch dark and the terrorists shifted in two to three houses, the operation was put on hold for the night. This morning two terrorists of Jaish were killed,” Kumar said.

Two AK rifles were also recovered from the encounter site.

Security forces have stepped up anti militancy operations across Kashmir and this month 25 militants have been killed in gun battles.

IGP Kumar said the security grid is working on multi-dimensional fronts to prevent youth from joining militancy.

“We are working on a multi-dimensional front to prevent local youth from joining terrorist and those who motivate and lure youth towards militancy are being booked under Public Safety Act,” Kumar told reporters.
