COVID-19 cases in India at 1,58,333; death toll at 4,531

With 6,566 new infections recorded in last 24 hours, the total number of coronavirus cases in India reached 1,58,333, according to the data provided by the health ministry on Thursday morning. The death toll in the country also surged to 4,531 with 194 fatalities recorded in a span of 24 hours. This is the second highest fatality count ever recorded in the country in a day.

Of the total 1,58,333 cases, 86,110 are active cases, while 67,691 people have been cured of the deadly infection and were discharged from the hospitals across the country.

Maharashtra remains to be the worst hit state with 56,948 cases and 1897 deaths. Of the total cases in the state, Mumbai alone accounts for more than 60 per cent of the cases, with over 33,800 people getting afflicted by the deadly virus in the city alone. The fatality count in Mmumbai has also crossed the 1,000-mark and reached 1,044 till Wednesday night.

Following Maharashtra, the southern state of Tamil Nadu has been severely hit by the coronavirus. In the state, 18,545 people infected with the virus while 133 people succumbed to the infection. The mortality rate in the state has been lower as compared to other states in top five list.

Meanwhile, the infections in Delhi also crossed the 15,000-mark with 792 new cases reported in last 24 hours. With this, the national capital leaves behind Gujarat in number of cases and took the third spot in worst-hit Indian states. The death toll in the national capital also rose to 303. Whereas Gujarat with 15,195 cases of coronavirus cases is on the fourth spot. However, the fatality rate in the western state is much higher than Delhi and Tamil Nadu. In Gujarat, 938 people have succumbed to the deadly pathogen.
