DC conducts extensive tour of Jammu city to review traffic management

Deputy Commissioner, Sushma Chauhan, today had an extensive tour of Jammu city to review the status of traffic management besides assessing bottlenecks impeding smooth flow of traffic in the city.

DC was accompanied by Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation, Avny Lavasa, SSP Traffic Jammu, Joginder Singh, Superintending Engineer PDD, Sandeep Seth, Superintending Engineer PWD, Ravinder Mansotra, Executive Engineer UEED, Ashwani Seth, RTO Jammu, Dhananter Singh, DSP Traffic South, Sachin Gupta, DSP Traffic North, Jeevan Sharma besides the representatives of Project Management Consultants Jammu Smart City Limited and other senior officers of the concerned departments.

DC visited the areas which cater to major traffic flow in the city including Satwari Chowk, Panama Chowk, Narwal, Jewel, Canal Road, Talab Tillo, Kamla Palace Road, Bakshi Nagar, CPO Chowk and Kachi Chawni.

She laid emphasis on removal of major bottlenecks such as shifting/realignment of utilities like electric poles; passenger sheds, communication junction boxes, unauthorized extension on the main roads and thus on spot decisions were taken for coordinating interdepartmental interventions leading to action within a 10 day’s time.

During the visit, PMC consultant of Jammu Smart City informed the DC, who is also Chief Executive Officer, Jammu Smart City, that 10 Junctions namely Mian Dido, Karan Nagar, Shakuntala, Prasar Bharti, Gujjar Nagar, Prem Nagar, Satwari, Jail/Ambphalla and Vivekanand have been tendered out in Phase-I and the work for improvement of these junctions will start in 3 week’s time.

Main works in these Junctions which shall be taken up for de-congestion of traffic are construction of Railing throughout the footpath, creation of median/traffic islands, foot over bridges, table tops crossings, Bus over lays, bus shelters besides Police Posts and slip lanes.

PMC further informed Deputy Commissioner that the bid evaluation for allotment of Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is in the final stages and the work on the same shall be started in a month’s time. The ITMS projects will help in reducing the traffic congestion and smooth traffic movement in and around the city.

Deputy Commissioner said that this tour is being undertaken to ensure a suitable mechanism at ground level to prevent the road side parking, which is the main cause of traffic congestion. She also apprised that around 40 identified locations have been notified as designated parking spaces by JDA and JMC which shall also be put on public domain widely and the commuters are requested to park their vehicles only at the notified locations in order to avoid inconvenience besides imposition of penal action.
