ANANTNAG, APRIL 16: As part of the 100 day campaign under Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyaan launched by Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Dr. Bilal Mohiud Din Bhat, today chaired a meeting with prominent religious clerics, including Masjid Imams and scholars, at Dak Bunglalow Khanabal.
The meeting was aimed to seek their support in intensifying the fight against drug abuse and was attended by ADC, ACR, DSWO besides other concerned officials, religious clerics and Masjid Imams.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC described drug abuse as a grave social evil that is steadily entering homes and destroying the moral and social fabric of society. He emphasized that religious leaders, being influential voices within communities, have a crucial role in guiding youth towards a life free from addiction.
He urged the clerics to sensitise the masses about the ill effects of drug abuse by referring to religious scriptures and values and to consistently promote awareness within their respective communities.
He called upon them to dedicate a segment of their Friday Sermons and congregations on drastic individual and social consequences of drug abuse and invoke moral and theological teachings to tackle substance abuse.
Terming the fight against drugs a “collective responsibility”, the DC stated while administration and law enforcement agencies are targeting the supply side, the role of parents, teachers, religious figures and civil society is essential to constantly persuade and motivate the vulnerable population not to use contraband substances and assist in eliminating the menace from society.
During the meeting, Dr. Bilal reiterated, while stringent action is being taken against drug peddlers and suppliers under the provisions of the NDPS Act, a compassionate and non-stigmatised approach must be adopted towards the victims. He stressed the importance of identifying affected individuals at the community level and facilitating their treatment and rehabilitation at designated Drug De-addiction Centres and Addiction Treatment Facilities, while ensuring full privacy and confidentiality.
Cautioning about the devastating impact of addiction on individuals and families, the DC called for sincere and collective efforts from all sections of society to curb the menace. He expressed hope that with the active involvement of religious institutions, the ongoing campaign against drugs will gain further strength and lead to the realisation of a drug-free district, Union Territory and country.
The religious clerics, while expressing concern over the menace of drug abuse, put forth their valuable suggestions and assured full cooperation with the district administration. “Fight against drug abuse is a collective challenge and this is our social and moral responsibility to save the youth and vulnerable population from consumption of drugs and intoxicants”, they pledged in unsion.
They further committed to utilise their platforms to spread awareness and guide society away from this destructive path and lead towards positive and constructive direction.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to work collectively towards eliminating drug abuse and safeguarding the future of younger generation.
