DC Kupwara distributes Ice Boxes to strengthen Fisheries Sector

KUPWARA, FEBRUARY 05: As part of ongoing efforts to improve post-harvest facilities in the fisheries sector, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Shrikant Suse in the presence of Assistant Director Fisheries Kupwara, Dr. Salman Rauf Chalkoo, and other officials of Fisheries Department Kupwara today distributed 10 pairs of ice boxes (50 litres + 25 litres) among fish farmers and members of the fishermen community under the Jammu and Kashmir Competitiveness Improvement Project (JKCIP).

The ice boxes have been provided to support effective post-harvest management and to facilitate safe storage and transportation of fish produce. The initiative is aimed at reducing spoilage and maintaining the freshness and quality of fish, which plays a vital role in improving marketability and income levels of fishermen and fish farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, the DC highlighted that the initiative is in line with the Government’s broader objective of strengthening agriculture and allied sectors and improving the livelihoods of people dependent on them. He stressed that such interventions help fishermen avoid distress sales and enable them to access better market opportunities.

The DC added that the availability of ice boxes would significantly reduce post-harvest losses by preventing bacterial growth and physical damage to fish. He noted that proper icing and cold storage immediately after harvest is essential for ensuring hygienic, handling and supplying safe, fresh fish to consumers.

The Assistant Director Fisheries informed that the use of modern ice boxes will also help in strengthening the cold chain from harvest to market, ensuring better logistics and consistent availability of fresh fish in local markets. He added that the initiative encourages the adoption of scientific post-harvest practices among the fishing community.
