06 Jan: The strategic Zojila Pass on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, connecting the Kashmir Valley with the Ladakh region, will be closed from Saturday. The last caravan was flagged off on Friday. This time, despite heavy snowfall, it was kept open till December and January due to the tireless efforts of the Border Road Organization (BRO). The defense spokesperson said that the BRO, through its tireless efforts under Project Beacon, ensured this and facilitated connectivity to the Ladakh region. Around 13,500 vehicles have crossed Zojila from Kashmir to Ladakh since November 25.
The official said that the height of Zojila Pass located on the Srinagar-Sonmarg-Gumdi road is 11,643 feet. Kashmir acts as the lifeline between the valley and Ladakh. He said that the pass was kept open till January 6 for the first time. Earlier last year it was kept open till January 3. The spokesman said that for the first time in 2020, the Zojila pass was kept open for a longer period by the BRO keeping in view the situation on the northern borders. Against all odds, ensured smooth movement of vehicles at Zojila Pass during the current winter season.
The spokesman said that more than 20 heavy duty plant equipment including four state-of-the-art snow cutters were deployed to keep the road open. Despite minus 20 degree Celsius temperature, snow storms, insufficient oxygen, strong winds and frequent avalanches in the region, the BRO personnel do not back down from their duty. He ensured smooth movement of vehicles at Zojila Pass during the current winter season against all odds. The official said that the BRO has also completed successful testing of route navigation and navigation system technology for snow clearance to enhance efficiency and safety while carrying out such operations.
