The bandh organized by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association on the demand of construction of a multi-storey building in the High Court complex at Janipur to conduct all judicial work in one campus, had a massive impact on Monday. All business establishments remained closed in Jammu city and adjoining areas and there was desolation on the roads.
This bandh was also supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jammu, so shops and shopping malls remained closed in almost every area. Lawyers, under the banner of the Bar Association, demonstrated by burning tires on the main road outside the court complex at Janipur on Monday morning and then took out a rally in vehicles from there. The rally passed through different parts of the city during which the lawyers appealed to the common people to make the bandh a success.
All J&K Transport Welfare Association did not support the Jammu bandh of lawyers but passenger vehicles remained closed in most areas. Minibuses are considered to be the lifeline of the city and on Monday these minibuses were also seen a few times. Three-wheeler drivers also thought it better not to take to the roads. Even the few minibuses that were seen running in the city were forcibly stopped by the lawyers. The keys of some were snatched, while some of the passengers were let down. The All J&K Transport Welfare Association has also accused the lawyers of vandalizing passenger vehicles.
Jammu bandh did not have any significant effect on schools and colleges. All government and private schools in the city opened as usual, although attendance was slightly less than normal days. There was additional deployment of police outside the big government schools and colleges of the city so that there would be no riots here. Similar arrangements were made outside the University of Jammu as well.
