IPS vs IPS: Top cop Basant Rath files police complaint against J&K DGP Dilbag Singh

Afresh controversy has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir after top IPS officer Basant Kumar Rath filed a complaint against his own boss, Director General Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh.

In his complaint, the 2000 batch IPS officer asked the police to take cognizance of “threats to his life and liberty” which he alleged were given to him by the top cop.

“I am writing to you to take note of my genuine apprehensions about my safety and reputation. I am not asking you to lodge an FIR against the person mentioned above [DGP Dilbag Singh]. I am just asking you to make this letter a part of the daily dairy in your station. Today. Now. In case something bad happens to me, you should know whose number to dial,” IPS Basant Rath mentioned in the letter he wrote to the Gandhi Nagar Police Station SHO.

Basant Rath is presently posted as IGP Home Guards in the Union Territory.

Rath has also marked a copy of the complaint letter to the DGP. “I expect you to acknowledge this letter. You can send me a screenshot of my WhatsApp. Or you can send me a DM on Twitter. I am @KangriCarrier. It is a reasonably popular twitter handle in Kashmir,” the letter added.

In the subject section of the complaint, the IPS officer wrote, “Requesting you to take note of my apprehension about my life, liberty and bald head the reason being certain activities of Sh Dilbag Singh, IPS batch 1987 batch, presently DGP”.

Earlier, this month, Basant Rath tweeted to an account named ‘Dilbag Singh’, “Hi, Dilbag Singh. Can I call you Dilloo? Are you the one who owns 50 canals (six acres) of land in Sarore near the dental college?”

The DGP, meanwhile, has not made a statement on the issue. DGP Dilbag Singh, however, dismissed allegations in a WhatsApp group.

Basant Rath also shared the alleged screenshots of the conversation on Twitter.
