JAMMU SANS TRAFFIC SENSE
Looking into the gravity of the situation with regard to the fatal accidents occurring in J&K especially in the Chenab Valley region, there seems to be some kind of basic flaw among the community which is causing this needless exigency across the roads of the UT because it is not possible that accidents occur if the commuters abide by all the traffic norms and follow basic traffic obligations. Going by the case of yesterday when there was festive mood across the city of temples, the way the public gave two hoots to the traffic rules by flouting all the basic norms of parking, driving and maintaining decorum, it becomes clear that there is inner urge among the commuters of the region not to follow rules while on wheels. The scenario across the city especially near the main churches was pathetic with people mocking at rules by breaking them with impunity and traffic police struggling to regularize the flow of vehicles. The worst scenario was on the Main Road Gandhi Nagar, where every rule meant for smooth traffic movement was broken by the commuters and the worst affected were the ambulances which were seen snarling amidst the bevy of vehicles as the unruly parking and free for all situation was making life difficult for those who wanted to move along this road stretch. Sirens and hooters of ambulances were of no use as the people showed height of indifference by parking their vehicles in the middle of the road and making fun of traffic rules showing the basic character of the city towards its reasonability with regard to behaviour on roads. Looking into the situation in most parts of the city yesterday, it could be said that whatever is happening on the roads of J&K is not that bad because the people with no traffic sense can create more dangerous situations across the UT. Yesterday’s scenario is testimony to the fact that a large section of commuters in J&K has the tendency to remain in a stage when there were no traffic rules and people used to drive haphazardly without considering the rights of others. This tendency is unfortunate and uncalled for and therefore the people need to be educated afresh as whatever has been taught with regard to traffic is not enough rather it is dismal.
