Himachal CM says UCC proposal being studied

New Delhi, April 24 . Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Monday said his officials are studying how a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) can be brought in Himachal Pradesh after Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh announced they will have a uniform personal law.

He said officials in Himachal were studying how a uniform civil code can be implemented in the state but added that no decision will be taken in haste. “We are examining how it can be implemented in Himachal Pradesh,” he said. Thakur did not rule out the possibility of announcing the UCC ahead of the state elections which are likely to be held in November this year.

The Allahabad High Court, in response to as many as 17 petitions related to interfaith marriages in November last year, had asked the Union government to consider setting up a panel for implementing the mandate of Article 44 which says the state shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a UCC throughout India.

UCC calls for the formulation of one law for India, which would be applicable to all religious communities in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.
