GCW Gandhi Nagar celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity
JAMMU, MAY 22: To mark ‘International Day for Biological Diversity’ Government PG College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu today organised a series of events under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav under the patronage of Dr. Sangita Nagari, Principal of the College.
The day is observed every year on May 22nd to increase awareness globally and enhance people’s appreciation and dependence on nature and nature’s resources.
The theme of this year is “We are the part of solution # For Nature” which emphasizes hope, solidarity and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future of life in harmony with nature.
To celebrate the day, Department of Botany organised an online lecture for students and faculty on the topic- Plant Diversity and Human Health”.
Prof. Mala Bhasin, Head, Department of Botany presented a warm welcome to the chief Guest Dr. Sangita Nagari, Principal of the College and Resource Person Dr. Anil Kumar Thakur, Associate Professor, Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Shimla (HP).
Dr. Anil Thakur talked in detail about huge diversity of medicinal plants present around us. He spoke in detail about many categories of medicinal plants including plants used as immunity boosters, used in cold cough, fever, hypertension, diabetes and other disease. He stressed upon the conservation of this huge wealth of medicinal plants which is a great repository for future. The event was co-ordinated by Prof. Sania Hamid and Dr. Anju Koul. The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Harjeet Kour.
In the series of events, NSS unit of the college also organised a digital Poster Making Competition and Essay Writing event on the theme- We are part of Solution # for Nature. A total of 82 volunteers showcased their creativity in Poster Making and 15 volunteers in Essay writing event. The posters were adjudged by Ms. Seema Bhasin, Director Finance, HUDD. The first and second positions were bagged by Surbi Singh and Sneha Katal whereas Sapna Thapa and Rashu Sharma both got third position.
In her virtual address, Principal Dr. Sangita Nagari appreciated the efforts of organizing committee and NSS Programme Officer for organizing these events with great zeal and enthusiasm. She encouraged the students to make a plan to take action so as to make our mother planet a happier and healthier place to live. She said that we should take the requisite steps and change our attitudes and behavior to preserve, protect and promote our natural resources for our benefit today and for the generation to come. She further added that despite all our technological advances we are still completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy. NSS Programme Officer Prof Mala Bhasin thanked the NSS volunteers for their participation in the events. A collage of the best posters was also uploaded on the social platforms.
