T he seismic zone across the Himalayan belt has been highly active over the past few months. On Tuesday, October 6, yet another moderate intensity earthquake occurred in Ladakh, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. No casualty or damage to property has been received so far.
As per the National Center for Seismology records, more than 20 earthquakes have occurred across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh over the last 30 days. Among these, three moderate earthquakes of intensity more than 5.1 on the Richter scale have occurred in Ladakh alone since October 25.
An official of the MET department confirmed that an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred at 5.13 a.m. on Monday. The epicentre was in Ladakh region—near the Indo-China border—and its depth was 10 km inside the earth. Light intensity temblors have been occurring intermittently in J&K during the last one month with epicentres in the Ladakh-Tibet region.
