National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah and four other MPs from Jammu & Kashmir have been nominated as associate members of delimitation commission set-up by the Government of India for fixing boundaries of assembly segments in the newly carved out Union Territory.
Documents in possession of news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), reveal that LS Speaker Om Birla has nominated three NC MPs- Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Justice (retd.) Hasnain Masoodi and Muhammad Akbar Lone- as associate members of delimitation commission which was constituted under J&K Re-Organisation Act-2019 and Delimitation Commission Act-2002.
The documents reveal that LS secretariat has also written to ECI Principal Secretary K.N.Bhar about nomination of these MPs from J&K for serving as associate members of delimitation panel.
Two BJP MPs- Dr. Jitendra Singh and Jugal Kishore Sharma- have also been nominated as associate members of the panel. Interestingly, NC has challenged J&K re-organisation Act which facilitated delimitation of assembly segments in J&K.
Sources disclosed that National Conference is likely to spell out tomorrow whether it will participate in proceedings of the commission.
“We will come out with our response tomorrow,” as senior party leader told KNO. Under the Delimitation Act- 2002,none of the associate members shall have a right to vote or to sign any decision of the Commission
