1st Road Safety Week 2020,  Transport Commissioner reviews preparedness

Transport Commissioner J&K, Dr. Owais Ahmed, today chaired a meeting to review the preparedness for smooth conduct of 31st National Road Safety Week, which is being observed from January 11 to January 17, 2020 across Jammu and Kashmir.

This year’s Road Safety Week would focus on spreading awareness about traffic rules and regulations and safe driving among the people in general and teen agers in particular.

The meeting was attended by the Director State Motor Garages, Z H Choudhary; Joint Transport Commissioner, Gurmukh Singh; Additional Secretary Road Safety Council, R K Bhat; Additional Transport Commissioner, Swarn Singh; Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Jammu Dhanatar Singh; SSP Traffic Jammu Joginder Singh; SSP Traffic Rural M L Kaith; Joint Director Education Shokat Mahmood; General Manager, JKSRTC Jammu, Parmjeet Singh and ARTOs.

Highlighting the importance of Road Safety Week, the Transport Commissioner said that around 80% of road transport accidents are preventable and it is very much important that awareness programmes are organised with active involvement of youth to prevent such accidents.

He stressed upon concerned Departments to complete the necessary arrangements for smooth conduct of Road Safety Week. He said that Road Safety Week events would be organized at all District Head Quarters to spread awareness among masses about basics of driving.

The meeting was briefed that after inaugural function, Walkathon/Flag off Rally RADMS would start from Gulshan Ground Jammu.

“Besides Road Safety awareness cum health check up, rose-gift campaign to aware Traffic violators will be held from Maheshpura chowk to Railway Station Jammu” the meeting was told.

The TC directed the RTOs and ARTOs concerned to replicate the events in all districts of the UT.

He stressed on the need to give wide publicity to safety measures such as use of helmet and seat belts.

Meanwhile, the meeting was informed that the event would also include distribution of pamphlets at major rotaries in Jammu city. “An interaction with media will also be organised at Wave-mall Jammu, followed by a painting competition on the subject”, the meeting was informed.

Two wheeler rallies involving students would also be organized from Jammu University, the meeting added.
