A Special Police Officer (SPO) posted at the checkpoint was run over by a speeding truck in Baghe Bahu area of the city during a checkpoint set up by the police at a forest check post to check vehicles on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The SPO died in the accident itself. While hitting the SPO, the truck hit the wall after hitting the iron barricade on the block. The driver of the truck was also injured in this accident. He has serious injuries in both his legs.
On the other hand, SHO Bage Bahu Sikandar Chowdhary told that the dead body of SPO Rajat Chowdhary s/o Lekh Raj, resident of Muradpur, Bishnah, who died in the accident, was handed over to his family members for the last rites after getting the post-mortem done at GMC Hospital. SPO Rajat Chowdhary was posted at Bage Bahu police station and was on duty at the forest check post at the time of the accident. A case of culpable homicide has been registered against the truck driver at the police station.
The incident happened at 4:30 am on Wednesday. Truck number TN29BL-3747 coming from Kashmir towards Jammu was stopped by the SPO posted at the block for investigation. Due to the high speed of the vehicle, the driver of the truck suddenly failed to brake and after hitting the iron barricade put up by the police at the naka, crushed SPO Rajat Chowdhary and stopped after hitting the wall. The police personnel posted at the block got the SPO admitted to the hospital. In the preliminary investigation, the doctors declared the SPO brought dead. At the same time, the driver of the truck was also injured in this accident.
