Democracy cannot run without elections: Dr. Karan Singh

J&K Former Sadar-e-Riyasat Former Central Mandi Dr. Karan Singh while stressing on early elections in Jammu and Kashmir said that democracy cannot run without elections. Dr. Karan Singh, who came here today to vote for the post of Congress President, said in a brief conversation that it is for the government and the Election Commission to decide when the elections are to be held here. We demand that elections should be held soon. All parties want elections to be held. This is necessary, without elections democracy does not work. He said that the process of delimitation has been completed. So now we are hearing that the assembly elections here may be held in March.

Dr. Karan Singh is the son of the last Dogra ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh. Maharaja Hari Singh had signed the letter of accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India. Referring to the elections being held for the post of President in Congress, he said that two things are happening very well. One, the election for the post of Congress President is being held, it is very good. Till today such an election has never been held, long ago the president was elected in the Congress. Second thing is Rahul Gandhi’s padyatra, Bharat Jodo Yatra. This is a very good thing. In this way the relations with the people will increase.

On the ongoing controversy regarding revision of voter lists in Jammu and Kashmir and voting rights for citizens of other states, he said that it is a twisted matter. Sometimes it is said that 25 lakh voters will be formed, to be honest, I do not have complete understanding of this matter. So I can’t say anything on this.

On the Congress’s preparations for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, he said that he mostly stays in Delhi. I come here for a very short time in Kashmir. Right now the election for Congress President is going on and I was here in Srinagar so I have come here to cast my vote. Only the state Congress leaders present here can tell about the preparation of the Congress for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
