Jammu, May 9: In a path breaking achievement the Government Medical College Jammu has got the distinction of becoming the first Medical College in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to successfully perform three live kidney transplants.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha taking to microblogging site said, “GMC, Jammu has become the first medical college in the UT to successfully perform kidney transplant. Many congratulations to the team of doctors & nursing staff for this path-breaking achievement.”
Principal GMC Jammu, Dr. Shashi Sudhan Sharma said that this is the first time that Kidney Transplant has been done in a Medical College in the UT and with this the GMC Jammu has become one of the very few Medical Colleges in the country where Kidney Transplant is done.
She said that it was possible because of the support from the Administrative Department and through co-ordinated efforts by the Departments of Urology, Nephrology, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Blood Bank, Radiology, Medical Superintendent and Deputy Medical Superintendent, SSH.
In the first case the kidney of a mother was successfully transplanted to her 27-year-old son, in the second case the kidney of another mother was transplanted to her 36 year old daughter and in the third case, the kidney of a wife was transplanted to her 60 year old husband.
The recipients hailed from districts Kishtwar, Doda and Jammu respectively.
All recipients were cases of Chronic Kidney Disease on dialysis. After the family members came forward to donate their kidneys, the transplantation was carried out after completing all the legal formalities.
The procedure was carried out totally free under Ayushman Bharat Sehat Scheme.
Dr Shashi also informed that donor nephrectomy was done laparoscopically and all the kidney donors were discharged on the May 5 post operative day and out of the three recipients, two are being discharged.
HoD of Department Urology, Dr. Elias Sharma said that due to the transplant team’s efforts, the transplantation procedure went smoothly and the department is also ready to take up cadaver transplant in near future.
For this, patients would have to register themselves with State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) J&K in Super Speciality Hospital Jammu.
The Nephrology team was led by Dr. Raju Bhandari and Dr. Aman Gupta and did a commendable job including planning, pre-transplant, transplant and post-transplant management of the patients.
