Policeman wounded in Srinagar attack succumbs

A policeman, critically wounded in a militant attack here on Saturday morning, succumbed to his injuries, officials said.

The shooting took place at Aiwa Bridge Ali Jan road in Srinagar.

“The policeman was shifted to a hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries this evening,” an official said.

The slain was identified as Constable Ghulam Hassan, resident of Srinagar.

Police said Constable Ghulam Hassan was unarmed and was on way to his office.

Soon after the shooting, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search for the attackers. However, the attackers managed to escape.

After Constable Hassan was shot his family condemned the attack.

“He was just going to his duty on his bike. He was a poor man earning his salary to feed his children. The attack is condemnable,” his brother told reporters after the shooting.

The attack on the cop took place a day after three militants including the oldest surviving militant of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in a gunfight along the Amarnath Yatra route in Anantnag.
