Gurupurab, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, founder of Sikhism, was on Monday celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety in the Kashmir valley and Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, his advisors, leaders of different political parties besides All Party Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) have greeted people, particularly members of Sikh community on the occasion.Undeterred by chilly weather conditions due to sub zero temperature in the morning, members of the Sikh community, including women and children, wearing colourful dresses were seen visiting Gurdwaras and other religious places since early this morning.However, this time due to renovation of Gurdwara Chitipadshahi at Rainawari in the down town, very less number of devotees joined the morning prayers. However, the management committee of the Gurdwara had set up langars for the devotees. APSCC chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina told UNI that main congregation on the occasion of Gurupurab will be held at Barzulla in the uptown.
Meanwhile, large number of devotees, including women and children, from different parts of the city participated in the special prayers held at Gurdwara at Barzulla despite chilly weather. Free langar was also set up by the management for the devotees.Reports of celebration of Gurupurab were also received from different parts of the valley, including Baramulla, Pulwama and Anantnag. Gurupurab was also celebrated in Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region.
