‘Dr. Nikhil Mahajan performs rare heart revival surgery at Narayana Hospital’

Though a treatable condition, cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality across the globe and the region. More than 20% of the cardiac patients succumb to mortality owing to inaccessibility to appropriate cardiac care. In fact, Mr. Wilson Sidhu would have also surrendered to his cardiac ailment if not for the intervention by the expert team at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. A post open heart patient, Mr. Sidhu was saved by the cardio vascular team at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital by implanting a CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) device, a rare heart revival surgery.

Hailing from Punjab , Mr. Sidhu presented at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital with reduced heart functioning, shortness of breath and fatigue. Though critical the cardio vascular team under the aegis of Dr. Nikhil Mahajan, Consultant Cardiology, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital took up the case. They did a detailed examination which revealed that he was heading towards a heart failure. The doctors also realized that the patient had a history of heart ailment and had previously undergone an open heart surgery to treat the condition. Though implantation of CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) is a challenging one in an open heart patient, as that was the most appropriate treatment modality, the doctors advised performing the same. A CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) was implantes. CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) is a device that monitors the heart’s rhythm, detects irregularities and corrects them with electrical impulses. The surgery was successful and the patient was discharged on the 4th day of surgery.

Speaking about the case Dr. Nikhil Mahajan, Consultant Cardiology said, “Unlike other patients, owing to his earlier open heart surgery, his heart was dilated and performing any procedure on him was a high risk one. We are glad we could successfully perform the surgery and patient’s body has responded well to it.”

“Implanting of CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) on a post open heart surgery patient is indeed a complex and a rare surgery and we are glad that our team has been able to successfully perform it. The success of this surgery is not only a milestone for us, it is an achievement for the region as going forward the people in the region will not have to travel to metro cities to avail such latest treatment modalities, added, Mr M M Mathavan, Facility Director at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Specialty Hospital.
