It took six months of continuous tracking to kill Riaz Naikoo: Brig Gupta

In a televised press conference yesterday IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar revealed that Naikoo was on the radar of security forces since last six months and he was being tracked. Killing high profile terrorists and particularly those who also enjoy local support is not an easy task but requires precision intelligence, detailed planning and coordination as well as dedicated resources said Brig Veteran Anil Gupta, a veteran security analyst who has also commanded a RR Bn. These specialised operations are undertaken by dedicated teams which are highly trained, motivated and extremely tough physically and mentally. It goes to the credit of JKP for creating and operationalising such teams. Though in counter terror operations, particularly in J&K, joint operations is the norm and no particular force can claim the success singularly, yet the singular role played by JKP in gathering intelligence and carrying out covert operations cannot be ignored and need to be appreciated asserted Brig Gupta.

The famous counter terror operation Op Sarp Vinash launched in Hill Kaka Bowl of Surankot sector was also a specialised operation but it was different in aim and scope. It aimed at clearing a particularly specified area of terrorists who had taken shelter in the area and 64 terrorists belonging to different jihadi organisations were killed during the operation. However, the type of specialised operation in which Naikoo was killed is different in the sense that a list of high profile terrorists is prepared by the police and thereafter teams dedicated to track and kill the specified individual terrorists.

JKP deserves credit for having developed this capability the trend for which was set by the Israeli Defence Forces after the Munich massacre during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, in which the Palestinian terrorist group Black September took eleven Israeli Olympic team members hostage and killed them along with a West German police officer. The Israeli Mossad thereafter prepared a list of suspected attackers and killed them one by one after tracking them in Europe and other places, revealed Brig Gupta.

It is reported that security forces so far have succeeded in killing about two dozen hard core terrorists both local and foreign by launching such dedicated teams against specified terrorists. In order to defeat the nefarious design of Pakistan and bring an end to terror in Valley, the police will have to double its effort to identify and neutralise the terror supporters and sympathisers as well. The recent success achieved by the security forces in nabbing the terrorists alive will help the police in establishing the terror support network and its subsequent elimination hoped Brig Gupta.
