A tragic aviation disaster struck Ahmedabad on Thursday as an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed, killing all 242 people onboard. According to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, the severity of the crash left virtually no chance of survival for anyone.
Identification Through DNA Testing
Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The aircraft was carrying 242 passengers, including 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian.
As of the latest reports, over 100 bodies have been recovered from the crash site. However, most of the remains are so severely charred that identification is not possible through visual means. Authorities have confirmed that DNA testing will be required for identification.
DNA Sample Collection Center Established
Dhananjay Dwivedi, Principal Secretary of Health, announced that Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has set up a facility for collecting DNA samples from close relatives of the victims. The Kasoti Bhavan building at B.J. Medical College (Ground Floor) has been designated as the DNA collection center. Only immediate family members (such as parents or children) will be eligible to provide samples.
