STABLE ECONOMY
As compared to other states and UTs, the economy in J&K is not that bad because hardly there are people who are penniless in the UT and there is no evidence that people here sleep hungry. The main reason behind this undeclared prosperity is that unlike the common belief that tourism is the mainstay of J&K economy, the income of most of the people lies in sectors like agriculture, horticulture, handicrafts, etc. Though, having possessed splendid beauty, many visitors do wish to come here especially Kashmir but due to tumultuous past three decades the tourism mostly remained in bad shape with tourist seasons witnessing a flip flop in the number of arrivals of tourists. Despite dwindling tourist footfall in the last three decades the situation of poverty is not that bad and people in the UT are mainly prosperous thus supporting the assertion that it is not only tourism which caters to the needs of residents of J&K but there are other fruitful sectors including the horticulture which are gainful and also good job providers. Though over three decades of terrorism had done much harm to the economy but there are sectors other than tourism in the UT which have helped the people to maintain steady pace and this is the reason that J&K today is in much better shape than many states and UTs of the country as far as economic stability is concerned. Despite terrorism, horticulture is booming with both fresh and dry fruits making way into markets across the country and even abroad with the help of pragmatic policies of BJP Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has shown extraordinary affinity towards issues of Jammu and Kashmir. As per reports, more than 80 percent people depend on horticulture, agriculture, handicrafts and other sectors while the tourism sector’s stake is not beyond 5 to 10 percent, which is nominal. It is not that the tourism sector is useless but what is to be seen is that other sectors should not be undermined in the UT as they also hold much significance though the sparkle and dazzle of the tourism sector is above all.
