A medium intensity earthquake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, hit the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
An official said the quake occurred in the Union Territory at 1932 hrs on Monday, the tremors of which were felt in Kishtwar and Udhampur districts of Jammu and most parts of south Kashmir.
He said the epicentre of the earthquake was located 14 km from Kishtwar, adding the co-ordinates of the earthquake are latitude 33.29 degrees north and longitude 75.52 degrees east. “There is no report of any casualty or damage to property,” he added.
Earthquakes have caused massive damage in Kashmir valley in the past as it is located in a highly sensitive seismological region. In 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale caused massive damage on both the sides of the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K.
