Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested eight drug peddlers and recovered huge cache of contraband from them in south Kashmir district of Kulgam.
A police spokesperson said that during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, officers at a check point established at Dalwach crossing Qazigund intercepted two vehicles. “During checking, police recovered 39 kg of Charas in raw form and 70 gms in solid form from the vehicle,” he said.
He said eight people onboard the vehicles were immediately taken into custody. “The accused were identified as Saqib Ali Zargar, Waseem Mohammad Trag, Abdul Mujeeb Khanday, Abdul Ahad Malik, Abdul Rashid Malik, Danish Fayaz Makhoomi, Tawheed Fayaz Makhdoomi and Nazir Ahmad Dar,” he said.
He said the vehicles used in the commission of crime have also been seized. “Accordingly, case FIR No. 307/2020 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Qazigund and investigation has been initiated,” he said.
He said community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood. “Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law. Police has resolved to deal robustly with drug peddlers,” he said.
“Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” he added.
