The total number of deaths in India linked to the novel coronavirus inched closer to the one lakh-mark with 1,095 new fatalites logged in the past 24 hours, government data showed Friday morning; the overall figure now stands at 99,773. The past 24 hours also revealed 81,484 new Covid cases, which takes the total number of confirmed cases in the country to nearly 64 lakh. The past 24 hours also saw 78,877 people discharged after treatment for the virus, taking the total number of recoveries past 53 lakh. The net rise in active cases in India over the past day, therefore, is 1,512. India remains the second worst-hit country in the world, but is now less than 10 lakh cases behind the United States. Within India Maharashtra remains, by some distance, the worst-affected state with more than 14 lakh confirmed cases.
