59 new COVID-19 cases in J&K, toll surpasses 1400 mark

The COVID-19 cases continued to rise unabated with 59 more persons, including 51 from Kashmir and six from Jammu, testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, taking the total number of infected people to 1449 in the Union Territory of J&K.

Meanwhile, the death toll due to the infection has risen to 20 in J&K with two elderly women from Kashmir dying due to COVID-19 in separate hospitals on Thursday, six positive patients were discharged after being treated successfully.

In this first four days of this week, J&K has recorded 266 new COVID-19 cases.

An official on Thursday said that 51 more people tested positive for Coronavirus in Kashmir division while six new cases were reported from Jammu. “Kulgam recorded the highest number of 21 new COVID-19 cases followed by Anantnag with 12 cases,” he said, adding seven persons tested positive for the infection in Kupwara.

He said Srinagar recorded five new COVID-19 cases, adding four more people tested positive for the infection in Budgam. “Three people each tested positive for the infection in Kathua and Ramban,” he said, adding two new cases were reported from Ganderbal.

He said Jammu and Kishtwar also reported one case each.

With 59 new cases, he said the total number of infected persons in J&K has risen to 1449. “Out of these, 1238 are in Kashmir and 211 are in Jammu,” he said.

He said the total active positive cases in the UT stand at 745, including 605 from Kashmir and 140 from Jammu.

He said six COVID-19 patients from J&K were discharged on Thursday after being treated successfully. “As many as 684 positive patients were treated and discharged successfully so far,” he said.

Last week, 389 new COVID-10 cases, mostly of them from Kashmir, were tested positive for the infection in J&K. One sixty people were tested positive for COVID-19 in J&K between May 4 to May 10. As many as 178 new people, including 174 from Kashmir and four from Jammu, tested for the virus between 27 April and May 3. About 168 people were tested positive for the infection April 20 to April 26.

As many as 118 people, including 111 from Kashmir and seven from Jammu, were tested positive for COVID-19 between April 13 and April 19. Meanwhile, 138 people, mostly from Kashmir, were tested positive for COVID-19 in J&K between April 6 and April 12. Thirty-three new positive cases, including 28 from Kashmir and three from Jammu, were reported on April 4 and April 5, making it one of the highest jumps in the COVID-19 infected persons in J&K.

Two elderly women died in separate hospitals due to COVID-19 in the summer capital, Srinagar on Thursday, taking the death toll due to the infection in the Union Territory of J&K to 20. With these, nine people have death due to COVID-19 in five days in the valley.
