J&K sees highest single-day jump of 108 COVID-19 cases, tally mounts to 1121  

Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest single-day jump in COVID-19 cases with 108 more persons, including 86 from Kashmir and 22 from Jammu, testing positive on Saturday, taking the total number of infected people to 1121.

With this, as many as 327 new COVID-10 cases, mostly of them from Kashmir, were recorded this week so far in J&K, where the death toll due to the infection has risen to 12. An elderly man, who died in a hospital in the summer capital, Srinagar on Saturday, tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, 29 COVID-19 positive patients were on Saturday discharged after being treated successfully in J&K.

An official on Saturday said that 86 more people tested positive for Coronavirus in Kashmir division while 22 new cases were reported from Jammu. “Kulgam recorded the highest number of 47 new COVID-19 cases followed by Anantnag with 17 cases,” he said, adding 12 people each tested positive for the infection in Kupwara and Ramban in Jammu.

He said 10 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Kathua in Jammu. “Five new cases were reported from Budgam,” he said, adding Srinagar recorded three and Baramulla witnessed two new cases.

With 108 new cases, he said the total number of infected persons in J&K has risen to 1121. “Out of these, 989 are in Kashmir and 132 are in Jammu,” he said.

He said the total active positive cases in the UT stand at 567, including 497 from Kashmir and 70 from Jammu.

He said 29 COVID-19 patients from J&K were discharged on Saturday after being treated successfully. “As many as 542 positive patients were treated and discharged successfully so far,” he said.

Last week, 160 people were tested positive for COVID-19 in J&K. As many as 178 new people, including 174 from Kashmir and four from Jammu, tested for the virus between 27 April and May 3. An alarming number of 168 people were tested positive for the infection April 20 to April 26. As many as 118 people, including 111 from Kashmir and seven from Jammu, were tested positive for COVID-19 between April 13 and April 19. Meanwhile, 138 people, mostly from Kashmir, were tested positive for COVID-19 in J&K between April 6 and April 12. Thirty-three new positive cases, including 28 from Kashmir and three from Jammu, were reported on April 4 and April 5, making it one of the highest jumps in the COVID-19 infected persons in J&K.

The death toll due to the infection has surged to 12 with an elderly man dying on Saturday in Kashmir. An elderly man had died on Wednesday in Jammu due to COVID-19. Earlier this week, an elderly man died on Monday due to Coronavirus in Kashmir valley. The death of the elderly man came just days after his son became the youngest victim of the infection in J&K.

J&K recorded first death due to COVID-19 on March 25, when a 65-year-old man from Hyderpora died due to the infection at Chest Disease Hospital. Then, on March 29, a 50-year-old man, a resident of Tangmarg, passed away at CD hospital.

Earlier last month, a 54-year-old Bandipora resident, who was tested positive for the infection, died at SMHS hospital. Later on April 8, a 61-year-old woman from Udhampur died at Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu. A 70-year-old patient died on April 17 due to Coronavirus in Kashmir valley. An elderly man, a resident of Baramulla, on April 18 died due to Coronavirus in Kashmir valley. A pregnant woman, who died at a hospital in Anantnag on Saturday, tested positive on April 26. An 80-year-old woman died in a hospital in Srinagar on April 28 due to the infection.
