Jammu and Kashmir: Two terrorists, associate killed in an encounter in Pulwama’s Awantipora

An encounter broke out between terrorists and the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday. The security forces gunned down two terrorists and an associate during the encounter.

The encounter took place at the Goripora area of Awantipora in Pulwama district earlier in the morning.

The security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Goripora area of Awantipora in the South Kashmir district in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday after receiving specific information about the presence of militants there, news agency PTI quoted a police officer as saying.

The officer further said that the search operation turned into an encounter when the militants opened fire at the forces. In the ensuing gunfight, two militants and one “hardcore” associate of the militants were killed, he added.

A search operation is still underway. The encounter comes at a time when the Union Territory is reeling under the rising threat of coronavirus. A total of 454 people have been confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Union Health Ministry.

As many as 109 people have been cured and discharged from the hospitals, while five have succumbed to the viral infection.

On Friday, two militants were killed in a brief encounter with security forces in Kulgam district, hours after they abducted a constable.

50 terrorists killed in J-K in 2020

At least 50 terrorists, including several top commanders of Jaish-e-Mohmmad (JeM) and Lashker-e-Tioba (LeT) terrorist groups, were killed in counter-terrorism operations by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir this year so far, according to the officials.

As many as 17 security forces personnel have also lost their lives while fighting the terrorists in the union territory and the militants also killed nine civilians in the last four months, they said.
