A gunfight started between militants and security forces in north Kashmir’s Sopore sub-district on Wednesday, officials said.
The gunfight erupted in the morning when joint teams of forces were carrying a search operation in Gulabad area of Sopore, some 50 km from Srinagar, following an input about the militant presence in the area “The cordon and search operation was launched on Tuesday evening. A tight cordon was maintained by the forces in the area for the whole night. This morning as the forces began the search operation, the hiding militants opened fire which triggered a gunfight,” a police officer said.
The operation is still on. There was no immediate report of any causality on either side.The counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir have picked up in the past few days. Nine militants and six security men have been killed in different operations in Kashmir since Saturday.
