J&K: Cop, civillian killed as militants open fire at police in Sopore, encounter underway

A special police officer (SPO) and a civillian were killed after militants opened fire on a party of security personnel in the Warpora area of Sopore city in Baramulla district of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday evening. Following the incident, the area has been cordoned off.

Inputs suggest that the militants opened fire when the police party was conducting a routine search of the area. It is believed that the militants are currently hiding in nearby villages and a search operation is underway to track them down and take them into custody.

While the SPO died on the spot, the civilian was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Officials have identified the SPO as one Wajahat Ahmad and the deceased civillian as Umer Subhan. Another SPO who has not been identified also incurred injuries during the attack and is undergoing treatment. More details are awaited as this is a developing situation.
