Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Sushma Chauhan today chaired 6th District Road Safety Committee meeting and reviewed the actions taken on decisions taken during the 5th meeting besides discussing road safety plan for district Jammu.
Several decisions were taken up in the meeting for controlling and minimizing accidents, smooth flow of traffic and implementing effective road safety mechanism.
Threadbare discussions were held on various issues including, identification of black spots and accident prone areas, removal of encroachment form important city roads, improvement of rotaries, identification parking spaces/ areas, modernization of traffic management system, enforcement of road safety rules. Also in the meeting it was discussed as to how the utilization of various equipments procured under road safety funds for conducting regular checking by the enforcement agencies to curb traffic violations can be achieved more efficiently. Further, identification of stops for Mini Buses/ Rikshaws in Jammu city was discussed. Promoting civil society participation in road safety initiatives and conduct of health cum awareness camps for drivers and conductors and other stake holders also to be given impetus as was decided in the meeting.
The Deputy Commissioner laid stress on identifying accident prone locations and black spots, installation of height and width barriers to restrict entry of heavy vehicles in the city besides initiating other remedial measures, installation of signages and generating awareness amongst people for making roads safer to commuters in the district. She also passed directions for organising special camps, workshops, lectures in all High schools, Higher Secondary schools and colleges regarding road safety measures at least once in a month as per prescribed format to achieve better results.
The DC also asked the SE PWD Jammu for conducting road safety audits of all Jammu city roads. Executive Engineer, I&FC Jammu was directed to not allow the executing agencies to dump silt on road side while carrying out de-silting activities. She also directed SSP traffic Jammu to share list of locations with SE, PWD where structural modifications are required in the existing rotaries and junctions, make necessary improvements for regulating traffic smoothly and to make it commuter friendly.
Directions were also issued to traffic and motor vehicles department Jammu for identification of idle parking spaces in the city thus enabling implementation of complete ban on road side parking. She also stressed for early start of e-challan system for curbing traffic rules violations in the city.
The meeting was attended by SSP Jammu, Shridhar Patel, Commissioner JMC, Avny Lavasa, ADC Jammu, Dr Tahir Firdous, SSP Traffic Jammu, Joginder Singh, RTO Jammu, Dhananter Singh and other senior functionaries of JDA, PWD, PDD, I&FC, Health, Education, Urban Local Bodies and other concerned departments.
