Police on Wednesday paid floral tribute to a policeman killed in an encounter with militants in south Kashmir district of Pulwama.
A police official told UNI that wreath laying ceremony was held at Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar to honour the valour of Special Operations Group (SOG) jawan, who was martyred in exchange of fire with militants at Khrew, Pulwama.
The wreath laying ceremony was led by Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh. Other senior police officers and officials from other security agencies also paid tribute to the martyred jawan, identified as Shahbaz Ahmad.
“We pay rich tribute to the sacrifice made by our jawan in an encounter with militants. His sacrifice will not go in vain,” Mr Singh told reporters after the wreath laying ceremony here on Wednesday.
He said the counter militancy operations have intensified in the valley, where successful over half a dozen operations have been carried out, resulting in killing of many militants.
Giving details about the operation, he said following specific information about presence of two militants, a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police, Army and CRPF at Khew on Tuesday.
He said an encounter ensued when security forces were cordoning off the area. “An SPO Shahbaz Ahmad and an Army soldier were killed in the exchange of fire,” he said.
