Heavy snow in Kashmir Valley

 

 

Heavy snowfall in Kashmir continued for the second day throwing life out of gear as many roads, including the Jammu-Srinagar national highway that remained blocked and flights were cancelled.

The Meteorological (Met) Department has forecast more snow over the next 24 hrs till Thursday. Kashmir Valley recorded sub zero temperature in the night.

“The major weather system has subdued, however, Kashmir will witness more snow over the next 24 hours,” Sonam Lotus, Director Met, kashmir, told IANS.

He said that from Friday onwards the weather will improve.The Jammu-Srinagar national highway have remained closed for the last three days due to landslides triggered by incessant rains at Digdol, 150 km from Jammu.According to an official, 3,000 trucks and 84 light motor vehicles were stranded on the national highway.

“Efforts are on to clear the highway for the stranded vehicles,” an official said.Three feet of snow has accumulated near the Jawahar Tunnel on the national highway. Men and machinery were on the job to open the road.People were finding it difficult to go to their work places, and do other outdoor activities due to the snow accumulated on the roads. Many remote areas in the valley have been cut off due to the heavy snowfall.
